About Crown Church, Inverness
Crown Church, Inverness is a parish church in the Highland city, standing where Midmills Road meets Kingsmills Road, close to the centre. It belongs to the Church of Scotland. In 2004, its 820 members made it the denomination’s largest Inverness congregation by membership.
The church was designed by Inverness-born architect James Robert Rhind and was originally commissioned by the Free Church of Scotland. Its foundation stone was placed on 24 November 1900 by Robert Rainy, the inaugural moderator of the United Free Church. Containers holding newspapers, coins and church and council records were set beneath it. The building opened in 1901, by which time the congregation had joined the United Free Church; this body merged into the Church of Scotland in 1929. Inside is a pipe organ with three manuals and pedals.
