About Parish Church of St Mary, Welwyn
The Parish Church of St Mary, Welwyn is a Church of England parish church in Welwyn, Hertfordshire. Standing north of the River Mimram within the town’s conservation area, the church is protected as a Grade II listed building. As recorded in November 2020, it was open to the public each day.
The nave and chancel date from the 13th century and may occupy the location of an earlier Saxon chapel that was destroyed. In 1662, an aisle was introduced alongside the nave and the tower was rebuilt. Further enlargement and restoration took place from 1867 to 1870, supported by Charles Willes Wilshere. This work added a choir aisle, organ chamber and vestry. The current tower was completed in 1910, while a church house was added in 2007 on land that had once formed the northern section of the churchyard.
