About Saint John the Apostle and Evangelist

Saint John the Apostle and Evangelist is an active Church of England parish church on Sutton Road, near central Watford in Hertfordshire. Part of the Diocese of St Albans, it follows the Modern Catholic tradition, shaped by its longstanding Anglo-Catholic identity, and supports the ordained ministry of women and men. The church has held Grade II listed status since 1983.

Its origins date to 1873, when a temporary metal church formerly used at St Mary’s was moved to donated land. Growing attendance prompted plans for a permanent home, whose foundation stone was placed in 1891. Designed by Eley Emlyn White, the present building was dedicated by the Bishop of St Albans in 1893 and became an independent parish church in 1904. Later conservation included work on the sanctuary and chancel in 1961, internal redecoration following 1966, and treatment of the exterior stone in 1973. Notable features include a 1911 pipe organ by J. W. Walker & Sons and a rood screen by Sir Ninian Comper.
