About Oxhey Chapel
Oxhey Chapel is a Church of England building in South Oxhey, around two miles south of central Watford in Hertfordshire. Built in 1612 and designated Grade II*, it is no longer in regular use and is maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust. The chapel remains consecrated and is occasionally used for weddings.
Sir James Altham founded the chapel for his household at nearby Oxhey Place, possibly where a monastic church had previously stood. Parliamentary troops occupied and damaged it during the Civil War. Its walls feature a chequered arrangement of flint and red brick, with stone detailing and a tiled roof. Restoration took place in 1852 and again in 1897, when vestries were added and the seating reorganised. Following a partial roof collapse in 1962–63, the roof and bellcote were replaced. Inside are a richly carved seventeenth-century wooden font, an ornate reredos and the monument to Sir James Altham and his wife Helen.
