About St Mary the Virgin
St Mary the Virgin is a Church of England parish church at Walkern, near Stevenage in Hertfordshire. It remains in parish use and belongs to a combined benefice that also includes Ardeley, Benington, Cottered and Throcking. Granted Grade I status in 1966, the church occupies a protected historic area beside the village, not far from the River Beane.
The building originated before the Norman arrival, with its foundation traditionally dated to about 1050, and later generations made numerous alterations. One surviving section of the nave is Anglo-Saxon masonry. A carved work from that period appears in the southern aisle, positioned above the site of the earliest entrance. The church also contains a Purbeck marble tomb figure of a cross-legged knight. Possibly depicting William de Lanvalei, Walkern’s lord during the early 1200s, it reflects a thirteenth-century funerary fashion. He was among those chosen to uphold Magna Carta.
