About St Peter's Church

St Peter’s Church is an active Church of England parish church at the northern edge of St Albans city centre in Hertfordshire. It is protected as a Grade II* listed building and remains a place of regular Christian worship.

Tradition dates its foundation to AD 948, when Abbot Ulsinus is thought to have established it for pilgrims approaching the shrine of St Alban. The first building was probably timber, although none of it survives. Medieval elements include west and south entrances from the 13th century, while the nave arcades and much of the aisle masonry were renewed during the 15th century. Structural problems led to the central tower being dismantled around 1800 and replaced in brick. Lord Grimthorpe undertook a substantial restoration at his own expense in 1893, extending the nave and chancel, widening the north side and steepening the roof. The west front has a rose window between two turrets, and a three-manual organ made by Mander was installed in 2005–06.
