About St Michael's Church, St Albans
St Michael's Church is an Anglican parish church in St Albans, Hertfordshire. It stands west of the present-day city, within the remains of Roman Verulamium and on the former location of its basilica. The church continues to serve its parish and has Grade I listed status.
Its oldest surviving sections belong to the later Anglo-Saxon age, probably from the end of the tenth century or beginning of the eleventh. The original stone nave and chancel incorporated reclaimed Roman masonry, with Roman bricks around some windows. Northern and southern aisles followed in the twelfth century, while the thirteenth brought a raised window level, a southern chapel and possibly the western tower. Around 1340, work renewed the chancel and north aisle. Later additions include a fifteenth-century octagonal font, early modern wooden furnishings and a life-sized memorial to Francis Bacon, who died in 1626. George Gilbert Scott is associated with the church as architect.
