About St Leonard's Church, Sandridge

St Leonard’s Church, Sandridge is an active Church of England parish church in the village of Sandridge, near St Albans in Hertfordshire. The church is protected as a Grade II* listed building and contains architectural work from several periods.

The parish was established by 1119, when the building was consecrated in honour of St Leonard. Its oldest element may be the rounded chancel arch, built with reused Roman bricks and possibly dating from the eleventh century or earlier. Norman additions made between about 1160 and 1180 include the nave arcades and probably the font. The chancel was extended and reconstructed in 1399, while a decorated stone screen survives from the late fourteenth century. After an earlier tower collapsed in 1692 or 1693, the present tower was added between 1836 and 1838. William White oversaw a comprehensive restoration in 1886–87. The organ, dating from around 1880, was enlarged and relocated in 1914, and the church’s bell peal was dedicated in 1890.
