About St Albans Cathedral

St Albans Cathedral stands in St Albans, Hertfordshire, and belongs to the Church of England. Its formal dedication is to St Alban, Britain’s earliest recorded Christian martyr. Alongside its role as a cathedral, it serves the local parish, with the dean acting as rector. It received cathedral rank in 1877 and is protected as a scheduled monument.

A religious community may have been established on the site during the eighth century, traditionally under King Offa of Mercia. The surviving structure is largely Romanesque and Norman, dating to the eleventh century, although later medieval Gothic work and Victorian alterations are also present. Builders reused brick, tile and dressed masonry taken from Roman Verulamium, combining these with local flint and lime mortar. After the monastery was suppressed in the sixteenth century, the building continued as a church. It occupies ground associated by tradition with Alban’s death and houses the burial place of St Amphibalus.
