About Saint Leonard's Church

Saint Leonard's Church is a Church of England church in Bengeo, Hertford, standing on a slope above the valleys of the rivers Beane and Lea. Dating from around 1120, it is Hertford’s oldest surviving building and is listed at Grade I. The church holds Sunday worship during the summer and is also used for concerts and exhibitions.

Built mainly from flint with stone detailing and a tiled roof, the church retains a 12th-century south entrance, a 14th-century door and a later brick porch. Its uncommon apse is one of only three medieval examples in Hertfordshire. After Holy Trinity Church replaced it as Bengeo’s parish church in 1855, the building was emptied and left unused for several years. John Thomas Micklethwaite restored and refurnished it for the Gosselin family between 1884 and 1894. A timber bellcote contains one bell cast in 1636, while traces of medieval paintings were revealed during further restoration in 1938.
