About All Saints Church with Saint John

All Saints Church with Saint John stands on Queens Road in Hertford. It remains an active Church of England parish church within the Diocese of St Albans and serves civic roles for both the town and Hertfordshire. Designated Grade II*, it is the county’s largest church apart from St Albans Cathedral and accommodates as many as 1,000 people.

The parish existed before the tenth century, with a church recorded on the site by 1086. After the medieval building was lost to fire in 1891, a replacement by the Lancaster architects Paley, Austin and Paley was consecrated in 1895. Sharpe, Paley and Austin completed the western section and tower in 1904–05. Built from red Runcorn sandstone in the Perpendicular Gothic Revival style, the church has a castellated west tower, stained glass by Kempe, surviving fifteenth-century brass fragments and a First World War memorial chapel. Its Henry Willis organ dates from the late nineteenth century, while ten bells were cast in 1907.
