About St Mary the Virgin's Church, Stansted Mountfitchet
St Mary the Virgin’s Church, Stansted Mountfitchet is an Anglican church in Bishop’s Stortford, Hertfordshire. Although no longer used as a parish church, it remains consecrated and hosts occasional services and events. The Churches Conservation Trust cares for the building, which is Grade I listed.
William Mountfitchet founded the church between 1120 and 1124. Its surviving Norman elements include the chancel arch and two entrances, enriched with zigzag, floral and geometric carving. The chancel was lengthened and a northern chapel added during the 13th century. A brick western tower followed in 1692, while Francis T. Dollman oversaw extensive restoration in 1888, rebuilding the nave and aisle. The structure otherwise uses flint and stone. Notable furnishings include a 13th-century font, a 17th-century cover and several historic tombs. Eight bells hang in the tower in an unusual anticlockwise arrangement.
