About All Saints
All Saints is a Church of England parish church in Hockerill, Bishop’s Stortford, Hertfordshire. The Grade II listed church remains a place of worship and is recognised as the first church designed by twentieth-century architect Stephen Dykes Bower.
An earlier church, completed in 1851, was largely destroyed by fire in June 1935, although its nineteenth-century timber lychgate survived. Work on the replacement began in 1936, with consecration following in July 1937. Faced in Kentish ragstone, the Gothic Revival building has a broad western tower crowned by a steep saddleback roof. Inside, tall pointed arches and large cylindrical piers support a panelled wagon roof above the nave, while the long chancel is aligned with the baptistery beneath the tower. Notable fittings include Hugh Ray Easton’s eastern rose window and a pipe organ made by Henry Willis II.
