About St Mary's Church
St Mary's Church is an active Church of England parish church in Baldock, Hertfordshire. Completed in 1381, it remains a place of worship and is protected as a Grade I listed building.
The church is largely a fourteenth-century structure, built from clunch and flint rubble with limited use of red brick. Its four-stage western tower rises to 54 metres and is topped by an octagonal lantern and lead-clad timber spire. The upper stages were constructed after 1415, while the spire dates from between 1415 and 1562. Later additions include the fifteenth-century north porch and aisle windows. Surviving interior details include medieval glass fragments, a wooden pulpit dated 1627, fifteenth-century seating and a traceried screen beside the Lady Chapel. Graffiti in the tower records the effects of the Black Death and includes a drawing believed to represent the former St Paul’s Cathedral in London.
