About Saint Vincent

Saint Vincent is an active Anglican parish church on Caldecote Road in Baldock, Hertfordshire. It forms part of the Diocese of St Albans and is protected at Grade II*, a designation received in 1968. Medieval paintings found beneath later coverings in 1963 are among its most notable features.

The church originated in the twelfth century and was consecrated by Norwich’s bishop, Herbert de Losinga. Its structure uses rubble made from clunch, with worked stone on the turret staircase. The chancel was reconstructed or enlarged early in the thirteenth century, and the southern aisle and compact tower at the western end were present by around 1340. Fifteenth-century changes probably added the eight-sided font, porch, turret and several windows. Other surviving details include pieces of medieval coloured glass, crosses scratched by pilgrims, historic memorial brasses and one bell thought to date from the late sixteenth century. A renovation took place in 1881.
