About Church of the Holy Trinity
The Church of the Holy Trinity is a Church of England parish church in Baldock, Hertfordshire, within the Diocese of St Albans. Dating from the medieval period, it remains the parish church and has held Grade I listed status since 1968. The churchyard contains an unusually long grave traditionally associated with Jack o’Legs, a giant from local folklore.
Built in the 12th century on a cruciform plan, the church incorporates flint and regularly laid ironstone rubble. During the 15th century, additions included the southern aisle, porch and transept, together with a clerestory and replacement windows. Thomas Smith reconstructed the chancel in 1840 using stucco-covered brick in a Neo-Norman style. Restoration followed in 1867, when the tower received its upper section, and a vestry was completed in 1880. Surviving medieval details include the 15th-century nave roof, grotesque corbels and an octagonal font. The belfry houses five bells cast between 1634 and 1867.
