Constructed between 1877 and 1880 to designs by William Cheiake of Hereford, it replaced a church built around 1150 that had fallen into poor condition. Elements salvaged from its predecessor include Romanesque doorway arches, several windows, tower timbers and a medieval font. A carved tympanum depicts Samson opening a lion’s jaws and is attributed to the medieval sculptor called the Chief Master. Other historic features include a 1473 memorial slab, fragments of a 15th-century chancel screen and four tower bells dating from 1671 to 1930.
