About St Ann's Church, HMNB Portsmouth
St Ann's Church, HMNB Portsmouth is an Anglican chapel within the naval base in Portsmouth, Hampshire. It has a longstanding role in Royal Navy worship and houses many memorials commemorating sailors who died at sea. The chapel is protected as a Grade II listed building and is the earliest naval dockyard chapel still standing.
An earlier chapel was erected in 1704 where Admiralty House now stands. The present building opened in 1786 and was constructed from red brick laid in Flemish bond. Its design may have been prepared by Navy Board surveyor Marquand while working under Samuel Wyatt, with Thomas Parlby and Sons serving as contractors. After sustaining damage during bombing in May 1941, the church underwent restoration in 1955 and 1956. Its memorials include a stone unveiled in 2019 to mark 80 years since HMS Royal Oak was sunk at Scapa Flow.
