About Cathedral of St John the Evangelist
The Cathedral of St John the Evangelist is a Roman Catholic place of worship in Portsmouth, Hampshire. It is the diocesan cathedral and houses the bishop’s official chair. Opened and dedicated in 1882, the church was Portsmouth’s earliest purpose-built cathedral and is protected at Grade II.
Work commenced in 1879 following Gothic Revival proposals prepared by John Crawley. Joseph Hansom assumed responsibility after Crawley died, adapting the scheme and remaining involved until 1896. Fareham red brick forms the walls, complemented by details in Portland stone. The western façade was added in 1900 and the bell towers followed six years later. Ground conditions meant that the intended spire could not be constructed. A wartime bomb in 1941 largely spared the building’s fabric but ruined most of its coloured glazing; only the south transept’s circular window escaped. Restoration proceeded gradually and concluded during the early 1960s.
