About Royal Garrison Church
The Royal Garrison Church is an Anglican place of worship in Old Portsmouth, Hampshire. Formerly known as Domus Dei, it is now managed by English Heritage and designated as a scheduled monument. Its chancel survives under cover, while the central section of the nave remains open to the sky.
Peter des Roches, Winchester’s bishop, and William of Wrotham founded the institution in about 1212 as accommodation and care for poor and sick people. The Crown acquired the complex in 1540, and it housed weapons for the next two decades. After declining condition, the chapel was repaired for military worship in 1767. G. E. Street supervised further work from 1865 over a ten-year period. A German air raid on 10 January 1941 left the nave without its roof and ruined every stained-glass window. Replacement windows mainly depict connections linking Portsmouth, Christianity and the British Army, although the eastern window uses a conventional pattern. Roofing was reinstated above the side aisles in 1995.
