About St Cynhaearn's Church
St Cynhaearn’s Church stands at Ynyscynhaearn in Gwynedd, about 900 metres from Pentrefelin, on land that formerly formed an island within Llyn Ystumllyn. Once the parish church serving Porthmadog, it is now redundant. The Grade II* listed building has been maintained by the Friends of Friendless Churches since 2003 and is accessible along a historic causeway.
Dedicated to Cynhaiarn, a saint of the fifth century, the church dates from 1101, with its nave originating in the twelfth century. The northern arm was added during the sixteenth century, followed by its southern counterpart in 1622. Built chiefly from rubble masonry, it has rendered sections and slate roofing. Inside are fittings largely introduced in 1832, including a three-tier pulpit and family pews. Further features include a west gallery, an 1834 Flight and Robson organ, late Victorian and Edwardian stained glass, and memorials to composer and harpist David Owen, John Ystumllyn and railway engineer James Spooner.
