About St Hywyn

St Hywyn is an active Church of England parish church at 24 Ffordd Mela, Pwllheli, Gwynedd. The Grade I listed church is also associated with poet R. S. Thomas, who served as its minister between 1967 and 1978. A display inside explores his work and life.

The site began as an early Christian community founded by the Breton-born Welsh saint Hywyn, probably between the fifth and seventh centuries. The surviving building dates mainly from the twelfth century onwards and has two parallel naves from different periods. Rubble masonry, slate roofing and a bellcote form the exterior, while the interior includes a hammerbeam roof and a fifteenth-century arcade. The church once served pilgrims travelling by sea to Bardsey Abbey. After falling into ruin, it was returned to use following restoration completed in 1868, with further repairs undertaken during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Two ancient carved stones commemorate the priests Veracius and Senacus.
