About St Cawrdaf
St Cawrdaf is a Church of England parish church in Abererch, near Pwllheli in Gwynedd. Dedicated to the Welsh saint Cawrdaf, it occupies the village’s western side. The church remains in use within the Diocese of Bangor, with services held occasionally, and is protected as a Grade I listed building.
The present structure dates mainly from the 14th century, though an earlier church was recorded in 1254 as belonging to Beddgelert Priory. Additions followed during the 15th and 16th centuries, with Henry Kennedy overseeing restoration in the 19th century. Built from local rubble masonry with sandstone detailing, the church comprises a nave and chancel under one continuous form, alongside a northern aisle and a bellcote. Surviving medieval stalls are especially notable, with misericords decorated by floral carvings and inverted masks. They may originally have come from the abbey on Bardsey Island.
