About St. Peter's Church

St. Peter’s Church is a Church of England church in Newborough, Gwynedd, standing on the village’s western side near the former princely residence of Llys Rhosyr. It is protected as a Grade II* listed building, a status awarded in 1968, and is notable as Anglesey’s longest church.

The oldest surviving sections, at the eastern ends of the nave and chancel, are from the early 1300s. The building may have developed from two adjoining chapels, one associated with St Mary and the other with St Peter, which were later combined. Its nave was lengthened westwards around the end of the 15th century or beginning of the 16th, followed by restoration campaigns in 1850 and 1886. Roughcast covers the exterior walls, while variations in masonry and roof construction reveal the building’s separate phases. Features include a richly carved gritstone font, two medieval chancel monuments bearing Latin text, and a pair of bells recast at Whitechapel in 1892.
