About St Dwynwen's Church
St Dwynwen’s Church is a ruined Church of England site on Ynys Llanddwyn, a tidal island near Newborough in Gwynedd. The island is usually joined to Anglesey but can be cut off by high water. The church survives as a scheduled monument within the Newborough Warren National Nature Reserve, an area noted for its dunes and varied geology.
The remains are associated with Saint Dwynwen, the Welsh patron saint of lovers, whose feast falls on 25 January. The church dates from the fifth century and has an uncommon cross-shaped plan for a building in this part of Wales. Archaeological investigations took place in 2011 and 2021. During the later excavation, evidence of structures predating the visible ruins was found beneath the site.
