About St Eugrad's Church

St Eugrad’s Church is an active place of worship in the countryside near Moelfre, Gwynedd. Standing in an oval burial ground beside a rural lane, it is part of a united parish with three other churches. The building is protected at Grade II* for its important medieval structure and distinctive character as a modest country church.

Tradition places its foundation around 605 and associates it with St Eugrad, although nothing remains from that period. The nave, chancel and the arch between them date to the 12th century. Built from rubble stone with gritstone detailing, the church has a slate covering, gable crosses and a single-bell western bellcote dating from the 17th century. Later additions include medieval doorways, a 16th-century northern chapel, and a porch and vestry from the 19th century, when careful repairs were also undertaken. Inside are a plain 12th-century font, a medieval Crucifixion carving and a memorial connected with the 1859 wreck of the Royal Charter.
