About St Peirio's Church
St Peirio’s Church is a modest medieval Church of England church near Llanfechell, Gwynedd. It stands in a rural churchyard beside the route to Bodewryd, with access along a wooded path. Worship has ended there, and the building is now closed with its windows covered. It is protected at Grade II for its historic significance and the traditional character that remains despite later changes.
A foundation date of about 605 has been suggested, though the surviving fabric is believed to be largely fifteenth-century. The structure uses rubble masonry, finished with dressed freestone, beneath a slate roof. A bellcote rises at the western end, while the nave and chancel form one continuous interior. Repairs were undertaken in 1812, followed later that century by another restoration, a new roof and the addition of the porch. Distinctive features include geometrically arranged coloured glazing, a simple font from the twelfth century and a brass plaque honouring three individuals who died in the 1640s.
