About St Mary's
St Mary’s is a Church of England church in Llanfechell, Gwynedd. It remains an active place of worship within a combined parish of five churches. The small rural church is Grade II listed, reflecting the architectural and historic significance of its surviving medieval character.
A church was documented on the site in 1254, although its original foundation date is uncertain. The present building retains medieval walls, while the north porch doorway, dating from about 1500, is its earliest datable feature. Rubble stonework, freestone dressings, a boulder base and a slate roof define the structure, with a bellcote holding a bell made in 1747. Following lightning damage, Henry Kennedy restored the church in 1867. Its coloured glass windows contain geometric designs influenced by Islamic art, included at the request of the benefactor Lord Stanley of Alderley. Other features include a late sixteenth-century east window, two fonts and several memorial tablets.
