About St Maethlu's Church
St Maethlu's Church stands on Bryn Llwyd in Llanfaethlu, Gwynedd, and serves as a parish church within the Bro Padrig benefice. Dedicated to Maethlu the Confessor, an early Christian saint associated with a religious settlement south of the present site, it is a Grade II* listed Church of England church. Its protected status was granted in 1971.
The nave was constructed during the fifteenth century and has three bays in the Perpendicular style. Rubble stone walls support a slate-covered roof, while a bellcote rises above the western gable and contains a bell made in 1760. The south wall retains two medieval windows with paired cinquefoil-headed lights. Original stone seating survives in the porch, which is probably contemporary with the nave. A chancel was built in 1874, followed by restoration during the early twentieth century. Bronze and marble memorials dating from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries line the north wall.
