About St Mary's Church

St Mary’s Church is a small medieval church in the countryside near Llanerchymedd, Gwynedd, on Anglesey. Formerly serving as a chapel of ease, it is now disused and largely ruined. The church received Grade II listed status in 1970, recognising its historic interest, simple character and unusually unaltered fabric.

Built during the fifteenth century, the church was associated with St Ceidio’s Church, around three-quarters of a mile to the east. Its rubble-built walls enclose a single space without a structural separation between nave and chancel. Much of the former slate covering has disappeared, though several early roof timbers survive, together with a western bellcote. Features include a late fifteenth-century east window, two obstructed south windows and a plain circular font from the twelfth century. Nineteenth-century repairs included the north entrance, while an inscribed stone dated 1798 may record earlier renovation. Slate memorials from the mid-nineteenth century remain on the interior walls.
