About St Ceidio's Church
St Ceidio’s Church stands in the countryside near Llanerchymedd, Gwynedd, within an elevated circular churchyard. Dedicated to the sixth-century Welsh saint Ceidio, it is listed at Grade II for its historic interest and close adherence to its medieval predecessor. Regular services have ceased, although local residents have undertaken work to care for the building.
Christian worship on the site may date back to around 630. The medieval church was reconstructed in 1845 under the rector Hugh Wynne Jones, retaining its earlier foundations and reusing much of the original stone. Built of rubble with freestone dressings, the church has a slate roof and a nineteenth-century bellcote. Inside, the nave and chancel form a largely undivided space. Notable survivals include a fourteenth-century east window, a fifteenth-century octagonal font, eighteenth-century marble memorials and an oak communion table made around 1700.
