About St Edwen's Church, Llanedwen
St Edwen’s Church, Llanedwen is an active parish church near Llanddaniel Fab in Gwynedd, close to the Menai Strait on Anglesey. It stands within the Plas Newydd estate and is one of seven churches in a united parish. Sunday morning worship follows the Book of Common Prayer, and the building is illuminated entirely by candles. It is listed at Grade II for its architectural interest as a small rural church designed by Henry Kennedy.
A church is believed to have been founded on the site in 640 by St Edwen, who was associated with Edwin of Northumbria. After a rebuilding by John Welch in 1840, the earlier structure was demolished in 1856 and replaced by Kennedy’s present design, retaining some masonry at the foot of the western wall. Constructed from squared local red gritstone with sandstone dressings, it has a slate roof. Inside are memorials from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, together with a reading desk incorporating medieval and later carved panels.
