About Church Of St Tanwg

Church Of St Tanwg stands among coastal dunes at Llandanwg, near Harlech in Gwynedd, roughly 20 metres inland from the shore of St George’s Channel. Sometimes called the church in the sand, it is protected as a Grade I listed building.

The present structure is medieval, although inscribed stones from the sixth century suggest that Christians used the site much earlier. Its western section may originate in the thirteenth century, while the chancel and eastward extension date from the fifteenth. Built from local rubble masonry with gritstone details and a slate roof, the church has a simple rectangular plan combining nave and chancel. Seventeenth-century alterations included changes to the windows, and an inscription dated 1685 may relate to this work. After a replacement parish church opened in Harlech, the building deteriorated and partly filled with sand. It was reroofed in 1884 and underwent major restoration in 1987.
