About St Padarn's Church

St Padarn’s Church is an active Anglican parish church in Llanbadarn Fawr, close to Aberystwyth in Ceredigion. Recognised as the largest medieval church in central Wales, it is protected at Grade I, reflecting its exceptional historic and architectural importance. Christian worship has taken place at this location for roughly fifteen centuries.

The church traces its beginnings to the early years of the sixth century and is traditionally associated with Saint Padarn, though surviving evidence leaves much of this period uncertain. The original community followed the Welsh clas tradition and developed into a notable centre for scholarship. Its role changed repeatedly, encompassing a Benedictine house, a restored clas community and a rectory held by the Crown. Control later passed to Vale Royal Abbey in Cheshire. Following the religious changes of the 16th century, it became a parish served by a vicar in 1538.
