About St Peulan's Church

St Peulan’s Church is a redundant Anglican church in rural Anglesey, south-west of Gwalchmai in Gwynedd. The Grade II* listed building is now cared for by the Friends of Friendless Churches. Its protected status reflects the importance of its medieval fabric and the survival of its modest, traditional character through later alterations.

Tradition places the foundation here in AD 630 and associates it with St Peulan, a follower of St Cybi. The nave belongs to the 12th century, while the smaller chancel and adjoining southern chapel were added during the 14th century. Constructed of rubble stone with gritstone dressings, the church has slate-covered roofs and a single-bell gabled bellcote. Nineteenth-century work included a replacement roof and new furnishings. Features inside include 17th-century seating, memorials from several centuries and an unusually early rectangular font, perhaps made in the 11th century and possibly first used as an altar.
