About Eglwys St. Cristiolus
Eglwys St. Cristiolus is an active parish church in Bodorgan, Gwynedd, Wales. Set on elevated land overlooking Malltraeth Marsh, it stands about a mile from Llangristiolus, whose name derives from the church and its patron saint. The building is protected at Grade II* for its considerable historic and architectural importance.
Tradition attributes the original foundation to St Cristiolus around 610, while the surviving medieval structure belongs mainly to the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Constructed chiefly of gritstone rubble with freestone detailing, it has a three-bay nave and a broader, two-bay chancel. The chancel was lengthened during the thirteenth century, and a notably large Perpendicular east window was installed in the early sixteenth century. Restoration in 1852 included substantial reconstruction of the chancel and the insertion of additional windows, while preserving its eastern wall and window. Inside is an ornamented twelfth-century font, together with memorials spanning the eighteenth to twentieth centuries.
