About St Mihangel's Church
St Mihangel’s Church, near Bodedern in Gwynedd, is a former parish church that now serves as the chapel for RAF Valley. Dedicated to St Michael, it stands beside the road within a walled churchyard at Llanfihangel yn Nhowyn. The church is protected as a Grade II listed building for its architectural interest as a notable mid-Victorian place of worship.
Although the age of the earliest church here is uncertain, the building was substantially reconstructed in 1862 by Bangor diocesan architect Henry Kennedy, retaining parts of the previous east end. It is built of rubble stone with freestone dressings, beneath a slate roof. In 1988, the disused St Enghenedl’s Church was taken apart and reconstructed as a western extension. Notable interior features include exposed roof timbers, a gritstone font and a seventeenth-century gravestone. Stained glass commemorates RAF Valley squadrons, Search and Rescue personnel, mountain rescuers and the RNLI.
