About St Edern's Church

St Edern’s Church is an Anglican parish church in the centre of Bodedern, Gwynedd, standing within its churchyard beside Church Street. It remains a place of worship and forms part of a group of nine churches. The building is protected at Grade II* for its significant medieval character and surviving historic fabric.

A church was founded locally by St Edern during the sixth century, while the earliest elements of the current structure are from the fourteenth century. Built of local masonry faced with dressed sandstone, it has a slate roof and a western bellcote containing a single bell, probably made in the seventeenth century. Henry Kennedy oversaw extensive work in 1871, rebuilding much of the nave and adding the chancel, porch and north-eastern transept. Features include fifteenth-century windows, stained glass, an early inscribed stone, a medieval font and decorated seventeenth-century woodwork associated with Jesus College, Oxford.
