About Our Lady and Saint James
Our Lady and Saint James serves Bangor in Gwynedd as a Roman Catholic parish church. It occupies a corner site where Holyhead Road meets Ffriddoedd Road, to the south-west of central Bangor, and has Grade II listed status. Its parish joined with St Helen’s, Caernarfon, in 2016 and also encompasses the Catholic chaplaincy at Bangor University.
Construction began in 1864, with the building opening for Anglican worship two years later under the dedication of St James. Henry Kennedy and John Mechelen Rogers produced its Gothic Revival design. Rogers was responsible for a southern chapel added in 1884, and Henry Harold Hughes planned the sacristy of 1894. The Anglican congregation left in 1994, and the Diocese of Wrexham purchased the property in 1996. Bangor’s Catholic community transferred from its smaller former home that year, combining the dedications of the two churches when the building reopened.
