Bangor Cathedral stands on High Street in Bangor, Gwynedd, and is dedicated to Saint Deiniol. This Church of England cathedral remains in use for worship and is protected at Grade I. Its discreet, low-lying position may have been chosen to reduce its visibility to seaborne Viking attackers.
A monastery founded by Deiniol occupied the site from about 530, but none of its fabric remains. The oldest surviving sections belong to a Norman, cross-shaped cathedral erected in the 12th century with financial help from Gruffudd ap Cynan. Damage caused by medieval conflicts led to successive reconstruction of the choir, transepts, crossing and nave. The tower was added during work completed in the early 1500s. From 1868, George Gilbert Scott oversaw extensive restoration. His proposed lofty tower and spire were dropped when structural cracks prompted fears of movement beneath the building. Inside is the Mostyn Christ, a late 15th-century oak carving, alongside woodwork by Robert Thompson. The grounds include a garden planted with species referred to in Scripture.
