About St Mary's Church

St Mary's Church occupies an isolated site outside Aberffraw in Gwynedd, on the island of Anglesey. Formerly associated with St Peulan’s at Llanbeulan, it served the vanished settlement of Tal-y-llyn. Worship ceased regularly around 1992, after which the building was declared redundant. The Friends of Friendless Churches assumed responsibility for it in 1999, and monthly services are arranged from May until October. It is protected at Grade I.

Although its precise age has not been established, the nave is thought to belong to the 1100s. The structure uses rough stonework, with substantial boulders strengthening its corners, while stone flags cover the interior floor. Its chancel was renewed towards the end of the 1500s, and a southern chapel was introduced during the following century. Surviving details include exposed medieval and later roof timbers, a vacant bell opening above the western end, an eight-sided 15th-century font, and Georgian-era furnishings. Local craftsmanship supplied new pews during repairs undertaken across 1999 and 2000.
