About St Beuno

St Beuno is an active parish church at 54 Church Street, Aberffraw, on the south-western coast of Anglesey in Gwynedd. Standing within a spacious churchyard, it is protected as a Grade II* listed building. The church is especially notable as an uncommon Anglesey example of a building with two parallel naves.

A Christian community was founded here by St Beuno during the seventh century, although the earliest surviving fabric belongs to the twelfth century. The building was substantially extended in the sixteenth century with a northern nave, linked to the original interior by four arches on octagonal columns. Constructed from rubble stone with sandstone dressings, it has slate roofs and a western bellcote containing two bells dated 1896. Restoration in 1840 revealed a blocked Romanesque arch decorated with chevrons and animal heads. Further rebuilding followed in 1868, when the chancel and northern walls were renewed and a porch and vestry were added. Other fittings include a thirteenth-century font and several eighteenth-century memorials.
