About Monton Unitarian Church
Monton Unitarian Church is situated at Monton Green in Salford, Greater Manchester. It remains an independent place of Unitarian worship, affiliated with regional and national Unitarian organisations, and is also used for community and heritage activities. The building is protected at Grade II* for its architectural and historical significance.
The congregation was formed in 1668, and the current site has accommodated four different chapels. The earliest opened in 1698, while later buildings followed after damage connected with the Jacobite rebellion and another replacement in 1802. Thomas Worthington designed the present Gothic Revival church, which was completed between 1873 and 1875. Roughly finished masonry, smooth stone detailing and slate roofing frame its cross-shaped plan. A 150-foot tower and spire dominate the exterior. Notable interior elements include a hammerbeam roof, richly worked wooden fittings, Minton tiling, original iron lighting and a Forster and Andrews organ gallery dating from 1883. Stained glass throughout presents biblical subjects alongside prominent figures from religious and secular history.
