About Saint Margaret's Church

Saint Margaret’s Church stands on Knutton Road in Wolstanton, Newcastle-under-Lyme, and belongs to the Church of England’s Lichfield Diocese. Worship continues with a service each Sunday at 11.15 am. The building is protected at Grade II*.

A priest was recorded at Wolstanton in 1086, while surviving portions of the church are medieval. An uncommon feature is the position of the tower and its eight-sided spire on the northern side, supported by earlier foundations. Work was undertaken in 1623, followed by major reconstruction in 1860 under Ward and Son, with Anthony Salvin responsible for the chancel. The interior includes a hammerbeam nave roof, four-arched arcades and a carved wooden screen before the chancel. Among the memorials is a sixteenth-century alabaster tomb depicting Sir William Sneyd and Anne, his wife. Eight bells hang in the church, six of which date to 1714 and arrived from Trentham in 1767.
