About St George's Church, Hyde

St George’s Church, Hyde is a Church of England place of worship on Church Street in Hyde, Greater Manchester. It remains in use as a parish church within the Diocese of Chester and has Grade II protection. Two related churchyard structures, an 1855 lychgate and a stone hearse house dated 1841, are also protected at the same grade.

Designed by T. W. and C. Atkinson, the church was erected in 1831–32 with financial support from the Church Building Commission. It first served as a chapel attached to St Mary’s in Stockport, becoming a parish church in 1842. The Gothic Revival building has stone walls, slate roofing, a seven-bay nave, aisles, a chancel and a three-stage western tower. Octagonal pinnacles, lancet windows, clock faces and a five-light eastern window are among its features. A modest chancel was constructed in 1882–83, followed by internal alterations in 1885. Its eight bells were made in Loughborough in 1920.
