About St Chad's, Cheetham Hill

St Chad’s, Cheetham Hill is a Roman Catholic place of worship beside Cheetham Hill Road, Manchester. It belongs to the Diocese of Salford and has Grade II protection. The building now houses the Manchester Oratory, formally founded at this site in November 2019, following the arrival of its Oratorian community in 2013.

Its roots extend to 1776, when a chapel honouring St Chad opened near Market Street with support from a £200 legacy left by the Revd Edward Helme. That earlier building was disposed of in 1846, and construction of the present church started in April of the same year. Weightman and Hadfield prepared the Gothic Revival design for Fr Robert Croskell. Erected across 1846 and 1847, it welcomed worshippers from August 1847, when Bishop George Hilary Brown conducted its opening. Diocesan clergy remained responsible for it until 2003.
