About St Paul's Church, Bury
St Paul’s Church, Bury stands on Church Street in Bury, Greater Manchester. Formerly a Church of England parish church, it ceased regular use in 1995. After suffering fire damage in 2004, the building was adapted as homes. It is listed at Grade II in recognition of its architectural and historic interest.
Built between 1838 and 1842, the church was designed by York architect John Harper on land donated by the 13th Earl of Derby. Its sandstone structure follows a Gothic Revival design inspired by the 13th century, with a clerestoried nave, aisles on both sides, a chancel and a tower at the western end. Lancet windows appear along the side walls and in the tower. Austin and Paley undertook alterations in 1898, taking out the galleries, restoring the roof and adding choir seating and a new font. The churchyard includes war graves from both world wars.
