About Bury Parish Church

Bury Parish Church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin, is an active Church of England parish church on The Wylde in Bury, Greater Manchester. Standing on raised ground near the town centre, it is protected as a Grade II listed building. The church is also associated with the Lancashire Fusiliers, and their military colours are kept in its nave.

Church records point to worship on this site as early as 971, probably in a simple wooden, thatched building. A Gothic replacement was finished in 1585, and much of that structure was reconstructed from 1773 to 1780. The current spire was added in 1842. After decay made another rebuilding necessary, J. S. Crowther designed the present main structure, which opened at Candlemas in 1876. It is built in worked stone and roofed with slate. Inside are mosaic paving, an elaborate timber roof and glass made by Hardman and Clayton and Bell.
