About Church of St Catherine

The Church of St Catherine stands on Richmond Street in Horwich, within Bolton, Greater Manchester. It remains in use as a Church of England parish church and belongs to the Diocese of Manchester. Together with three other local churches, it forms the united benefice serving Horwich and Rivington. The building holds Grade II listed status.

The Earl of Lathom laid its foundation stone on 2 October 1897, and the nave was completed in 1902 to a design by R. Knill Freeman. The chancel was not finished until 1932, when the earlier chancel was replaced. Designed in the Perpendicular style, the church is constructed from red brick, complemented by stone and terracotta details and slate roofing. Its plan includes aisles on both sides, a clerestory, north chapel, south transept, vestry and south-west porch. A bellcote rises above the transept, while the porch has a stepped, battlemented parapet.
