About St Boniface's Church, Bunbury

St Boniface's Church, Bunbury is a Church of England parish church in the Cheshire village of Bunbury. It remains in active use within the Diocese of Chester and shares a benefice with St Jude’s, Tilstone Fearnall. Recognised for its exceptional historic and architectural importance, it has Grade I listed status.

Christian worship on the site began with a timber church in the eighth century, followed by a Norman stone building by 1135. The present church is chiefly fourteenth-century, with rebuilding in 1320 and further work after Sir Hugh Calveley established a collegiate foundation in the 1380s. Constructed from red sandstone and roofed in slate and lead, it is largely Perpendicular Gothic in character, with a battlemented west tower. Notable features include the sixteenth-century Ridley Chapel, surviving medieval painted figures and stained glass, and the monuments to Sir Hugh Calveley and Sir George Beeston. Restoration took place in the 1860s, while the roof was renewed after wartime damage in 1940.
